Nellie McClung Girls' Junior High Program is one of the Edmonton Public School - Alternative Programming options and is not a private school.
It is an innovative, single-gender program where we empower girls to lead, challenge and change the world.
Some parents and educators think that an all girls school creates a falsely safe space by removing a girl from the influences of the opposite sex. This unrealistic environment, they contend, may render her ill-prepared for co-ed life.
We disagree. Her world will continue to include boys and men - at home and on weekends. Finding her voice, collaborating on projects and excelling in academics will prepare her for a purposeful life. She is free to experiment and explore, trying out new things and trying on new roles.
When you combine strong female mentors and positive role models, reduced sex stereotyping and abundant learning opportunities, the results are clear. Single gender schools for girls provide greater opportunity for educational attainment, curriculum and course placement, leadership behavior, number of years in formal education and occupational achievement.*

Parental Involvement
The program is supported by The Nellie L McClung Educational Society. A collaborative partnership among parents, staff, students, community, business and learning institutions will maximize student learning. We invite your input by attending NLMES meetings whenever possible. Parents are always needed to volunteer for various school activities. Even a few hours will make a difference!

SCHOLARSHIPS AND AWARDS
The teachers in the Nellie McClung program recognize the efforts and achievements of their students in many ways throughout the year. We also offer a number of year-end awards, two of which include $500 scholarships provided by the The Nellie L McClung Educational Society.
NELLIE L. MCCLUNG AWARD Presented to a grade 7, 8 and 9 student who best exemplifies the qualities promoted by the Nellie McClung program. These students must demonstrate academic achievement, responsible citizenship, leadership and a value for life-long learning, fitness and nutrition. The Grade 9 Nellie L. McClung Award includes a $500 scholarship.
FOUNDERS’ AWARD Donated by the Nellie L. McClung Society to honor the 4 founders, Kathleen McCalla, Julia Nelson, John Masson and Bob Hopchin. This is presented to one grade 9 girl who, throughout her three years in the program, consistently demonstrated vision, initiative, determination, commitment and growth; making herself and those around her the best they can be. Recipient of the Founders Award receives a $500 scholarship.
THINKING OUTSIDE THE BOX AWARD An award to honour our founder, Mr. John Masson. A student from any grade who best exemplifies the ability to: operate from hope of success rather than fear of failure, be flexible in how she sees events, someone who challenges the status quo to acknowledge the need for change, hears the pros and cons of things, seeks out fresh ideas from a variety of sources, takes fresh perspectives and risks in her thinking, and generates original and creative ideas.
SPIRIT OF NELLIE AWARD Awarded to one grade 7 student who is sincere, genuine, steady, reliable, self motivated, committed, open to change, a dependable team worker, works hard for a leader and for a cause, a great listener, accommodating, adaptable, has positive relationships, is calming and stabilizing, she is loyal and often the unsung hero.
LEADERS OF TOMORROW AWARD Presented to one grade 8 student who best demonstrates the potential for leadership and the qualities demonstrated by Nellie McClung to challenge, take risks and attain goals. This student must also exhibit the qualities of good citizenship.
